BHS Book Club

Fridays,  8:00 – 9:00 am, Alfalfa's, 1651 Broadway

Our first book of the 2017-18 school year will be Spark, by John Ratey, MD.  In this book, Dr. Radey discusses the transformative effects of exercise on the brain.  He embarks upon a fascinating and entertaining journey through the mind-body connection, presenting startling research to prove that exercise is truly our best defense against everything from depression to ADD to addiction to aggression to menopause to Alzheimer's.
A Message from Monique Guidry, Boulder High Physical Educator:
"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."   John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy spoke to what so many of us have felt intuitively about exercise and how our mind works best, but the book Spark came along and applied research to back up that notion. The author of the book, John Ratey, is a Harvard professor who accumulated the research into a fantastic book, then worked with a school district in Illinois to try and use the principles of the research within the Physical Education curriculum. His book has "sparked" many schools across the country to reflect and consider how we best insure our students will live a life of true wellness.
Boulder High Physical Educators have been on an exciting journey of their own, using the tenets of the book, to provide a diverse experience for their students, along with helping students understand the importance of physical activity for their learning and mental health - beyond the understood boost to physical health.
We would love for you to read the book and share our excitement in offering Physical Education courses which are beneficial to our students now and into their future.
